The Man behind Mercury
As the man whose childhood dreams and interests have fuelled the creation and expansion of Mercury, Ruan Dayananda sums up the driving force behind the Company's evolution with one simple phrase "Some things never change".
This couldn't be more apt since Ruan's interest in all things Mechanical began very early on in life. This childhood curiosity and passion for "how things work", led him to in-depth explorations of the technical functionality of all things, Electronic, Mechanical and Structural.
This natural born interest fast became a favourite hobby as he was christened the neighbourhood Mr.Fix-It, responsible for the maintenance of all his friends' BMX Bikes and Easy Rider Choppers. From these he graduated to Mopeds and the ubiquitous and nonetheless iconic Honda Chaly's & Yamaha Chappy's of the late 1980's.
Not content with merely fixing, Ruan began a collection of his own, filling the family garage with various Bikes and Chassis, constantly returning to one or the other to make improvements and upgrades. His personal bike collection now numbers 11 bikes, 8 Suzuki's, a Yamaha, a Kawasaki and a Scooter.
The trend continued unabated as Ruan secured an apprenticeship with the reputed Japanese manufacturer Suzuki Motor Corporation in Sri Lanka, a position he maintained when he travelled to Australia to complete a B.Sc. in I.T. Here too his passion for collecting continued with a garage that included 5 bikes, 3 Suzuki's - GSX250E, GS550E & GS650G, a Honda CB250T and a Honda Postie 180cc. He also expanded his reach so as to include his other great love - Cars, with a Toyota Celica 1980 and a 1983 Ford Laser Hatchback forming the basis of his garage in Western Australia.
This steadfast dedication and singular vision finally led to the opening of a Part - Time workshop, which, in a few short years resulted in the launch of Mercury Motorcycles - his first Full - Time Workshop, in Colombo 8 and just two years later, Mercury Motorworks (Private) Limited was launched in Rajagiriya.
Ruan credits most of the Company's success to his staff, and says that he chooses his Employees carefully, looking not just for Qualified and Experienced Individuals, but more importantly those he feels truly share his fascination with, and passion for, 'the way things work'.
